Growing Vegetables PDF Print E-mail
Ask anyone with a garden in their yard how good vegetables taste when they have been out of the ground for only a few minutes when you eat them. Ask anyone how much fun it is to get down on your knees, in the dirt, and feeling the earth between your fingers. Most will say it is not only therapeutic, but a very relaxing way to spend a few hours.

Can anyone grow vegetables? Sure you can. The basic rules are the same, sunshine and water. But each living situation presents challenges unique to that locale. You can have a garden if you live in an apartment. It just presents different challenges than a huge backyard. If you live in the north, even though it is cold half of the year, you can still have a garden. You could even make money at your local farmer's market using the land on your hobby farm.

Apartment dwellers need to look at their balconies, and then from there, find out what is the best way to set up your garden. There are special growing containers you can purchase, or even make from containers you have around the house. A simple internet search can help you get everything set up. Just remember that you will be somewhat limited with what you can grow, as you won't be able to set up what is needed for root vegetables.

If you are in a colder climate, it is possible to grow year round if you are willing to invest in a greenhouse. Having a greenhouse doesn't mean you don't have to do work to get the vegetables to grow, but it does give you the suitable environment to do your gardening. Greenhouses do much more than warming up an environment when it is cold outside, it also helps to cool the environment when the temperature gets too hot. When you are looking for seeds for your greenhouse, make sure you get ones that are specifically for greenhouse growing.

How about using vegetables as an extra source of income? If you have a small hobby farm, you can turn some of the land into money. All you need is a couple of acres and minimal farm equipment. Usually a tractor is sufficient. Since you aren't growing so much that you need a broker to make sure all the vegetables are sold before they go bad, you don't have to pay someone else part of the profits. You can grow enough to feed your family, and still have a nice variety and amount to take to your local farmer's market. Selling your vegetables in this type of venue allows you to have all the profits.

No matter where you are, or how much space you have, there are two factors that are of the utmost importance to gardening. You need sun and you need water. If you have an area that gets a minimum of 6 hours of sun a day, you can have a garden there. Check with your local nursery and they will be able to set you up with all the necessities for your area. Make sure you ask if you will need anything special for any of the vegetables you are thinking about growing.

Find your local gardening club and see what advice you can get from them. Call the nurseries and see what advice they can give you. Don't be surprised if the list of what you can grow is longer than you thought.
